woman-sexting

What would you think if you heard a group of male artists were using naked photos of women they’d met online in a gallery show without their knowledge or consent? That would be pretty evil, right? There’d be protests, and flour bombs, and not even Vice would defend it (I’m being optimistic).

But what if you flipped the sexes of the people involved? Then it would be feminist high art! At least according to a group of women Rush Limbaugh dreamed into being to show the world that feminists are man-hating idiots.

An art collective known as Future Femme has been gathering dick pics for use in a group exhibition in Brooklyn later this month that claims to explore “feminism, the internet, sex, porn, and power.” By blowing up dick pics procured from various men via the internet, the group hopes to “turn the tables” on some sort of fucked up sexual power dynamic. “In a national context in which women are treated less favorably than men—in the workplace, in healthcare legislation, and when it comes to sex and dating, it’s troublesome to me that women are getting flashed in the digital era,” sexual research scientist Justin Garcia told Vice for the magazine’s profile of the group. “With these pictures, you’re removing a certain agency from women. I think there’s a larger method of disrespecting women with these photos than we even recognize.”

This might all be well and good, if the photos in the show were actually unsolicited. But on the contrary, the women got these photos by meeting men online and asking for them, and one particularly boundary-less artiste even impersonated a gay man on Grindr for an easier dick pic harvest:

Most of the women have gone the straightforward route in collecting dick pics, using versions of their real OKCupid profiles and brief conversations—sometimes just going right for the jugular and straight-up asking for a dick pic, avoiding flirtation and conversation at all costs. One of the artists, however, went a step further by posing as a gay man on Grindr and wound up with 150  photos, which didn’t surprise any of the sex scientists or researchers I spoke to.

That’s right: a straight female artist went onto Grindr, one of few safe spaces that exists for gay guys to do their gay guy thing with each other, and collected dick pics to blow up and put on a wall without their permission. Feminism!

If this exhibit were utilizing dick pics guys had sent them in a harassing fashion, I’d be into it. But to go online and explicitly ask for dick pics to make some sort of feminist point is obviously dumb as shit. Are all men from now on just supposed to assume chicks are lying when we ask to see their dicks? Because believe it or not, some women like the way male genitalia looks. Not a lot. But some.

I recommend my fellow aficionados of good art and coherent politics stay far, far away from this shit show. And as for the members of Future Femme? A repeat of Women’s And Gender Studies 101 and the entire first year of art school.
