You know, there was a time when I really liked True Blood. Like, to an extent that I spent almost an entire day watching back to back episodes of the first season. Now? I don’t even bother to Tivo it. Sookie’s a fairy, or something like that, and good for her. I still tune in when I come across it and nothing else is on, but I just don’t care that much.

I feel like I’ve experienced the same sentiment with countless other shows I used to love. Desperate Housewives. Gossip Girl. I’d say Entourage, but I think Entourage’s quality has actually remained pretty consistent. Why do all these shows start strong with an awesome first season, and then start inventing increasingly impractical plotlines?

Generally, with ones like Gossip Girl or Desperate Housewives or True Blood, the first season had a plotline that tied it all together. In all cases, someone was dead, and they needed to find out a mysterious character’s dark secret. Okay. Cool.

Then the first season wrapped and suddenly Chuck was off trying to do Eyes Wide Shut stuff, and Sookie’s killing vampires while being guarded and pursued by werewolves. And none of these dramas seem to tie the season together. They seem like they’re really dramatic for one episode, and then you never hear about them again. It’s as though writers just said “hey, let’s forget all about that Eyes Wide Shut thing, we were drunk when we came up with that anyway.” Are they just making this shit up on the spot? Do they inexplicably have to engineer every plot the same day of filming? Is it like that middle-school game where you finish one another’s stories? I’m genuinely confused about why this seems to happen all the time.

Anyhow, in conclusion, Boardwalk Empire is now my favorite show, and it isn’t even on yet. What shows have you started out loving only to lose complete interest in?
