There’s been quite a bit of discussion on this site about the behavior of Versace muse January Jones as it relates to society’s treatment of conventionally beautiful women. Why does everyone (self included) catch such bad vibes off of her? Are we unable to separate her from her character on Mad Men? Or is it because she says things in interviews that make her sound like one of those women who doesn’t have any female friends because she thinks all other women hate her out of pure, seething jealousy? Are we just jealous of her?

A recently published tidbit in TV Guide suggests that she may, in fact, just be playing herself on Mad Men. When Jared Gilmore, the young actor who plays Bobby Draper, was asked what advice he had for the kid replacing him (he’s leaving to go to another TV show), he had this to say:

Be careful around January [Jones]. She’s not as approachable as the others. She’s really serious about what she does. Everyone else is so nice.

Snaps! Burned by an eleven-year-old! I’m guessing he’s not jealous of her big boobs and Nordic features, so he’s probably telling the truth. I’m calling it in favor of “January Jones is an asshole.”

Then again, she could just be extremely method. Her kids are supposed to be terrified of her on the show, so what better way to really sell it than to terrify them in real life as well? Maybe we won’t understand her genius until she takes on a totally different role and inhabits it just as fully. Maybe January Jones is the greatest actress of our time, and we have misunderstood her horribly.

I still wouldn’t send my kids trick-or-treating at her house if I were you, though. You know, just in case.
