86th Annual Academy Awards - Backstage

At last night’s Oscars, things TURNED TO BLOWS when Jennifer Lawrence, of arm fat fame, spotted Lupita Nyong’o, dancer extraordinaire, backstage carrying her freshly won best supporting actress statue. Lawrence, quick as a snake, lunged forward to try to steal the award! Nyong’o countered defensively, hanging on for dear life and defending her hard-won prize. In the end, she walked away with her statue, leaving Lawrence to burp and pee her pants at the same time while saying “likable!”

Well, just kidding. But one lucky photographer did catch this hilarious exchange between winner and loser last night, proving once and for all that it’s just a dumb game to actors and no one really cares about awards. Not to belittle these two stars with gushing, but Jesus Christ this is adorable.

While The Gloss was proudly Team Lupita in the best supporting actress category (her performance in 12 Years A Slave simply blew everyone in the category out of the water, including Lawrence in American Hustle), we’ve never been big fans of the cat fight narrative. That’s kind of the issue with awards in general–the idea that only one person can be recognized (or, actually, a lot of men can be recognized along with a few women) ends up pitting people against each other unnecessarily. And when its women who are pitted against each other, you see descriptions of claws out cat fights, instead of the “friendly competition” we allow men.

Oh well, here I go again, getting my feminist feathers all riled up. Regardless, this is one of my favorite moments of the night.
