I should just go ahead and open this up by disclosing my personal feelings towards Marina Abramovic: I love her. Art is hugely important to me (world’s most annoying six words), and it’s up there with food as one of my top passions. And I struggle with performance art sometimes, but Abramovic makes performance art that I’m pretty taken with. I adore her. But she’s been pissing me the fuck off recently.
Abramovic teamed up with Lady Gaga for a new promotional video for Abramovic’s Kickstarter page for the funding of her performance art center, The Marina Abramovic Institute. Since Gaga is promoting her own album ARTPOP (which is about art and pop), it would make sense that she’d attach herself to one of the buzziest artists around town right now.
The video shows Gaga engaging in the Abramovic Method, which is “a series of exercises designed to heighten participants’ awareness of their physical and mental experience in the present moment.” There’s a lot of yelling, crystals, walking slowly, and being naked.
I’m not going to sit here and mumble some bullshit about artists going mainstream and selling out because I’m not 15 and my favorite band didn’t start playing at bigger venues. I am interested in the symbiotic relationship between Abramovic and Gaga (and, recently, Abramovic and Jay Z)–that Marina uses collaborations with pop stars to get more mainstream visibility, while Gaga and Jay Z attach themselves to her to elevate themselves as artists. Artists are basically pop stars these days (this is nothing new), so I’m not surprised to see collaborations like this. But the 15-year-old in me does sort of want Abramovic to go back to hitting herself and getting naked, instead of filming Lady Gaga doing a watered-down version of art.
