As if The Avengers and Orange is the New Black weren’t enough, Marvel and Netflix have worked out a deal to make sure we never leave our couches again. Marvel announced today that it has signed on to make a miniseries and four separate live-action TV series for Netflix, and one of them has a female protagonist. I’m just going to order enough pizzas and couch wine that I won’t have to leave my house for the next six years.

According to, the deal guarantees a minimum of 13 episodes per series, the first of which will premier in 2015. The first starring superhero will be Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, then Iron Fist, and finally Luke Cage.

Daredevil is the most famous of the four, though he’ll have to fight the world’s memories of the 2003 Ben Affleck film to succeed. If he manages to hook viewers in the first series, then they will have no choice but to watch the other three, because the four will then come together in a team-up miniseries called The Defenders.

Jessica Jones is awesome, by the way. She’s a former superhero who works as a private eye and investigative journalist and she’s complicated and dark and brilliant. This is amazing news. A TV series about her was bounced around a few years ago for ABC, but nothing came of it and execs most recently said they were looking to find it a new home. It is unclear if that project has any relation to this one, but this deal is obviously way bigger.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment.

Netflix has been doing excellent things with its original programming, and we’re really excited for something as huge as Orange is the New Black, but with superheroes.

We can’t help but feel a little embarrassed on behalf of DC Comics, sitting over there complaining about how it can’t put Wonder Woman on a screen anywhere while Marvel continues to be glorious in new and amazing ways.
