When Courtney Love sat down with Fashionista, I’m sure she didn’t expect to be asked about her thoughts on Miley Cyrus. The shock factor might do something to explain why she answered with an awkward, insulting ramble about none other than Katy Perry, who doesn’t even go to this school.

The interview is a mostly rambling affair wherein she claims to be unaware of the 90’s revival in fashion and talked about how her style has changed due to her “newly committed career” of acting (apparently committed actors wear Jason Wu, Altuzzara, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, and Saint Laurent). When prompted with “what are your thoughts on Miley Cyrus,” Love responded with:

She has a crap stylist; at least Katy Perry lives out her insane fantasies and kids love it. I liked Katy when she was in a black shag and the shy girl on Glen Ballard’s arm at events. She was damaged goods by the time she got to Capitol [Records]. She really worked for it: ‘It’ being a career I find so boring it’s sort of sad, but what she wears is cute and in her own universe. Miley provided me with endless laughs at the VMAs. The Harajuku Japansese girl little bear suit was cute [sic].

I think we can absolutely all agree that Cyrus has a “crap stylist.” Now, Love’s pronouns are very confusing but if I’m reading this correctly (and, like a poem, no interpretation of a Courtney Love quote can ever be wrong), Perry was “damaged goods” that Love finds exceptionally boring. I didn’t think I’d spend today defending Katy Perry, but let’s not go around calling other women “damaged goods,” okay? Courtney, I love you, but this just playing into the sinister idea that women have an expiration date, and that sooner or later, we’ll all lose what makes us desirable and nobody will value us anymore. Also, how does Courtney Love manage to turn working hard for a career into an insult? Blerg.

She finally circles back to Miley at the end there. But wait a second, serious question: are “Harajuku Japansese [sic] girl little bear suit[s]” a thing? Or is Love thinking about Gwen Stefani circa 2004? Somebody please enlighten me.
