Stop the presses, guys–Miley Cyrus has finally revealed to the world why she can’t stop putting herself and her tongue at serious risk.

Much of Miley’s interview with Barbara Walters for “The 10 Most Fascinating People Of 2013” special included mature, insightful statements, including some about Liam Hemsworth that surprised us. In addition to her romantic discussions, she also answered a question that has been on everybody nobody but sort of everybody’s minds: Why does she constantly stick her tongue out?

Ever since the VMAS earlier this year (and, really, before as well), Miley has not stopped doing that weird, rolled out tongue thing whenever she’s dancing, posing or doing a music video.

According to her interview with Barbara Walters, Miley is simply being Miley. Well, sort of.

“I get embarrassed to take pictures. That’s actually the truth.

“I’m so embarrassed, because people are taking pictures of me, and I just don’t know how to– I don’t know how to smile, and just be awkward, so I stick my tongue out, because I don’t know what else to do.”

Huh. It’s weird how that only started happening when teddybears, faux-twerking and nubbins are involved.

But to be fair, I sympathize a bit (and I’m sure tons of other people do, as well): whenever I’m uncomfortable with somebody taking my photo, I wind up ruining the photo with an incredibly weird, eerily open-eyed facial expression. I have no idea why I do this, but it made choosing OKCupid pics difficult way back when.

While I was initially sad that we have gotten to a point in pop culture where a celebrity is giving entire interviews on her tongue and literally has fan sites dedicated to keeping their tongue infinite as a 10th grader whose just read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I remembered that somebody had undoubtedly said the same thing about a certain other famous face/tongue.

Insert some thoughts we’ve all already heard about the endless cycle of trends and something else we’ve all already known since the third grade about germs.
