Disney villainesses are just the best, aren’t they? Sure, the princesses are beautiful, but the villainesses have style. Between Maleficent, Ursula, and Snow White’s wicked stepmother, if Disney villainesses gave eyeshadow tutorials on YouTube I would watch and favorite every one of them. And while they all obviously have amazing looks that take a lot of time to arrange (you don’t think eyebrows like Maleficent’s just happen, do you?) among all the devastatingly stylish Disney villains, the one most known for her commitment to fashion is the fur-swathed puppy-napper herself, Cruella de Vil.
Cruella acted like a shallow socialite, but she was fierce. Check out that red-lined swing coat, the opera gloves and slinky dress in the middle of the day, and that avant garde two-tone hair. You have to admire her commitment to style (OK, we don’t usually recommend killing puppies to get it).
And now Cruella is getting her own fabulously live action Cruella de Vil movie, and we could not be more excited. Cruella will likely be a prequel, like the upcoming Maleficent, and tell the story of how Cruella de Vil came to be a puppy-killing but still devastatingly fabulous fashion icon. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie is being written by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna. Can’t you just see Cruella flinging her coats at a beleaguered assistant? Glenn Close is producing the movie, which is currently casting. Is Meryl Streep free?
Between this and Maleficent, we find ourselves hoping that Disney is heading for an all villainess team-up, like The Avengers but more fabulous.
We hope someone has Patricia Field on the phone. This movie is going to need a lot of fur coats and sparkling handbags.
