Writer, actress, and all around funny lady Mindy Kaling stopped by The Today Show today to discuss her favorite books of the year alongside none other than former president Bill Clinton(!) Mindy’s picks included books about Gwyneth Paltrow and Alexander McQueen, while Clinton’s were a bunch of tl;dr tomes to show off how smart he is.

Just kidding, Bill Clinton’s picks were fine. But it was still a pretty weird segment. The host started off by asking Clinton his thoughts on the international reaction to Kim Jong Il‘s death, then transitioned seamlessly into “why do books make a good gift?” Because they’re inexpensive and seem thoughtful?

Other amusing parts of this interview included:

-When the host mispronounced “Seamus” as “semen.”

-When Clinton laughed at the title of Mindy’s book, which he’d clearly never heard before.

-When Clinton said he’d like to read the first four of Mindy’s picks (11/22/63 by Stephen King, Bossypants by Tina Fey, Lady Gaga by Terry Richardson, and My Father’s Daughter, a cookbook by Gwyneth Paltrow), leaving out Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. Really, Bill? You’d rather look at photos of Lady Gaga peeing in a cup than Alexander McQueen’s life’s work? Actually, never mind, that sounds right.

-When Mindy Kaling bemoaned not having made her list “more PhD friendly.” You do you, girl.
