Remember that time The New York Times dissed Viola Davis by saying that she was “less classically beautiful”? If you’ve forgotten, I don’t blame you. I’ve been trying to forget about that incredibly tone deaf article too.
Well it looks like Viola is having the last laugh.
Last year she went on The View and eloquently responded to The New York Times with a statement that basically said “heard it all before guys, try harder.” The ill-worded phase became the hashtag #LessClassicallyBeautiful that swept across Twitter and The Times was forced to give an explanation (however weak) for their less than progressive take on the success and beauty of black women.
Tonight, Viola Davis won The People’s Choice Award for Favorite Actress In A New TV Series and looked like an actual goddess while doing so. She accepted her award while wearing a killer floor length pink dress. Not only did Viola serve us fierce tonight, she also gave a short and sweet acceptance speech that referenced the folks who were silly enough to think that she was anything less than overwhelmingly beautiful. In case you guys couldn’t tell, I’m sort of a big Viola Davis fan.
Viola had this to say as she graced the stage at The People’s Choice Awards:
“Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”
Mic drop. Viola then shimmied off stage with with her award raised high in the air. Okay, so it didn’t exactly go down like that after Viola left the stage, but if you ask me it should have. Viola certainly has all the right in the world to celebrate her hard won victory.
As Ashley Reese pointed out last year, seeing Viola be herself so unapologetically on primetime television was beyond powerful. I’m just glad that the rest of the world seems to love Queen Viola as much as I do.
