The 67th Annual Tony Awards took place in NYC last night and Kinky Boots was the surprise winner.
…That, alas, was the lion’s share of surprises. The red carpet was a pretty staid affair, with lots of solid colors and big stuffy formal silhouettes. And some sparkles.
But don’t worry–there’s at least one memorable disaster in the ranks.
Let’s start off the evening with Scarlett Johansson, who looked pretty damn stunning if not slightly underdressed? Dunno. Like the dark lipstick, though.
No clue what’s going with Krysta Rodriguez‘s dress. Teal piping?
Judith Light was dressed as Princess Buttercup at some important coronation or another.
Shalita Grant went solid and shiny, thank you.
Valisia LeKae’s dress reminded of that infamous Charlize Theron “boob flower” look from the Oscars, though more pink.
And with a peplum.
White and sparkly for Victoria Clark.
We heard Angela Bassett was originally considered to play Storm in X-Men. That would have been cool. Especially mohawk Storm.
Anna Kendrick wore blue and black–a favorite combination of ours–but that nonsensical sheer panel is killing it for us.
Beth Behrs looked like a cathedral window.
Bernadette Peters is awesome. She wore green.
Carrie Coon wore some more white.
Thankfully Cyndi Lauper was around to make things weird.
Debra Messing‘s hair seems a bit severe.
Jane Krakowski is a lover of sparkly dresses, so this seems appropriate.
Jane Lynch looked nice but the chunky heels are too Easy Spirit in the ’90s.
Your gown has too many textures, Laura Osnes!
Sometimes people don’t know what we mean when say “this gown is wearing this person.” Laurie Metcalf is here to demonstrate.
Martha Plimpton‘s dress fit really well and it’s an awesome color on her.
Patricia Clarkson wore a similar style in black.
This is a very big dress on Carolee Carmello.
Sally Field went simple and green.
While Sigourney Weaver went simple and blue. See a trend yet?
Thalia did blue, but with some sparkly accoutrements.
And, well, here’s the disaster of the night.
However, if there was a ‘queen of a dragon planet’ musical we don’t know bout, Cicely Tyson was dressed accordingly.
