Handbags have been on a shrinking trend, according to fashion designer Lulu Guinness, and we shouldn’t expect that to stop any time soon. According to Guinness, we can expect our already tiny handbags to keep getting tinier and tinier for a while, and she’s pretty sure it’s all due to Kate Middleton‘s influence.
“If she’s done anything for the handbag, it’s the fact that she wears small clutch bags,” Guinness said to the Telegraph.
When Grace Kelly was pregnant, the princess of Monaco used to hide her stomach by carrying a large Hermés Kelly bag. The Duchess of Cambridge, however, seems to prefer carrying tiny little clutch purses. Her prim, super ladylike style has become such a thing it’s even bleeding over and influencing designers who are normally considered a bit edgier, like Guinness herself.
“Personally, I am making my clutch bags smaller next season, so they’re more delicate and ladylike, and that’s to do with her, I think,” Guinness said.
Guinness has an OBE for her service to British fashion and even has the Royal Warrant for the Queen’s umbrellas.
But while the rest of us have to stuff our purses with things like wallets, spare shoes, Metro cards, and mass quantities of cookies, the shiny-haired duchess’ bags can continue to get smaller and smaller with impunity because fancy people don’t need to carry that much.
“She’s very elegant,” Guinness said. “But she’s also got people carrying the other things she needs, and a big car waiting for her.”
