Girls star Allison Williams is quickly becoming the breakout castmember when it comes to fashion. While series creator Lena Dunham is rumored to be set for the February cover of Vogue (and we totally think it’s about time), Williams has been snagging plenty of covers of her own, and she’s really been making an effort on the red carpet lately.
OK, sometimes she’s hit or miss, but you can’t fault her for not trying. Sometimes she tries too hard and the effect comes off costumey, but she gets an A for effort.
Last night she made an appearance at “Journey of a Dress,” a big, fancy fashion party celebrating the 40th anniversary of Diane Von Furstenberg‘s wrap dress. The wrap dress debuted in the 70s, but Williams decided to celebrate by going all the way back to the 50s. She looks so much like Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hudsucker Proxy we wanted to ask her to stake her Pulitzer on something.
Sure, it’s a pretty costumey look, but at least it’s a cute costume. And that makeup basically always looks good on everybody. My only major complaint is that the background is giving me a splitting headache, and it gets worse when looking at red carpet galleries of the other attendees.
Pro tip for event planners: If 80 percent or more of the attendees are likely to show up wearing printed dresses, avoid printed backdrops or the resulting photos will make everyone’s eyes bleed. It was a Diane Von Furstenberg party celebrating 40 years of her printed wrap dresses. Predictably, everybody showed up wearing prints and the event photos wound up looking like a Magic Eye gallery.
