Last night the BBC released this teaser photo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman from next year’s Sherlock Christmas Special, and while everyone was surprised to see the two in old-timey clothes, the first thing to jump out at us was the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch’s left arm and shoulder is completely missing. Not the left one! That was our favorite.
It is unclear how exactly Cumberbatch’s arm was removed, but his devoted and eagle-eyed fans noticed immediately, even though the Photoshopper apparently did not. In no time at all, Cumberbatch’s missing arm even had a parody Twitter account, because that’s just the world we live in now.
After it caught wind of all the shenanigans, the BBC tried to spoil the fun by fixing the photo.
But the mistake will live on in our hearts and minds and conspiracy theories forever.
But with Holmes now with all his appendages reattached, attention must be paid to the duo’s old-timey Victorian clothes. At first I took it for just a fantasy. (My personal fantasy.) But in an earlier announcement, the BBC One Twitter account teased this photo as one of Cumberbatch and Freedman in their actual costumes from the Sherlock Christmas special.
“Later on, a picture of Sherlock and John as they’ll appear in the special,” the BBC posted.
As much as I would love to see a Sherlock/Dr Who crossover with time travel involved, a costume party is more likely. That’s OK, time travel is pretty played out anyway. Costume parties are still fun.
