The moment when a bride reveals herself to the guests in her church, temple, hip museum venue, or backyard, there is always a beautiful and inimitable gasp. While the bride and the marriage itself are why everyone finds themselves tearing up, there is always a specific element that leads to a great deal of excitement, too: the wedding dress. And who does wedding dresses quite as well as the rich, famous and heavily-styled? Naturally, we’re talking about celebrities and their elegant, custom and often over-the-top wedding dresses.
Celebrity wedding dresses have a long tradition of being unique, in part because celebrities are often a little zany themselves and also because they’re so often starting from scratch to have designers create dresses for them specifically. The results are occasionally silly, but typically wind up being absolutely stunning and so very perfect for their bodies. While they may not be the type of gowns you can wear again after your wedding (unless you’re a celeb getting married like four times a decade), these are all beautiful in a way that only designer and couture gowns can be. So, which celebs have chosen the best ones?
1. Portia De Rossi
While Ellen Degeneres‘ white suit was excellently tailored, Portia’s dress was just impossible to stop staring at. She looks like a fairy princess.
2. Elizabeth Taylor
This beautiful silk down that Liz Taylor wore to her wedding to hotel heir Conrad “Nicky” Hilton proved once again that a perfectly-fitted dress with a wide neck and lace overlay is timeless.
3. Kaley Cuoco
Remember this gem from the very beginning of the year? Despite Kaley’s occasionally rough red carpet style and Ryan Sweeting‘s bad couple tattoo, it is undeniable that she had one of the loveliest wedding dresses we’ve ever seen. And in such a beautifully unconventional color!
4. Audrey Hepburn
This Pierre Balmain dress was a wonderful choice for the actress to wear at her wedding to Mel Ferrer. A high collar, nipped in waist, tea-length hemline and garland atop her head make this one of the best (and most charming) wedding looks of all time.
5. Gwen Stefani
This dress that the No Doubt singer wore in her wedding to Gavin Rossdale is probably my favorite on this entire list. Gwen did ombre before ombre was remotely cool, let alone before it went pink, neon and all over the place. Her wedding dress…
6. Grace Kelly
For her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, Kelly picked one of the loveliest dresses the world has ever seen. It was created by Helen Rose, a costume designer for MGM, which makes a great deal of sense given how cinematic the overall look is. From the veil that goes on for days to the dramatically high neckline, Kelly’s gown fit the regal and royal setting perfectly.
7. Chelsea Clinton
Chelsea Clinton’s stunning Vera Wang gown took center stage at her 2010 wedding to Marc Mezvinsky. And now she’s pregnant! We can’t wait to see her maternity wear this year.
8. Chrissy Teigen
Wow, the model looks incredible in this big tulle-skirted gown. While the enormous dress might have overwhelmed the small frame of another, Chrissy is a seasoned pro in wearing clothes rather than letting the clothes wear her. She is positively killing it in this photo.
9. Jacqueline Kennedy
Naturally, Jackie O’s Ann Lowe-designed gown had to make this list.

10. Marilyn Monroe
Never one to follow the crowd, Marilyn Monroe skipped the ivory ballgowns for her wedding to baseball player Joe DiMaggio and instead wore a brown wool suit with a fur collar, along with her trademark perfect curls and stunning makeup.
11. Yoko Ono
Nobody does “effortless cool” quite like Yoko, whose short dress at her 1969 Gibralter wedding to John Lennon is one of the greatest ever. Seriously, how many people on Earth can pull off a floppy sunhat and knee-high boots at her wedding?
12. Kelly Clarkson
My favorite thing about Kelly’s wedding dress is how her it is. It’s bold, pretty, feminine and cute without going too over-the-top.
13. Anne Hathaway
I was obsessed with Anne’s pale pink Valentino gown back when the photos first came out, and even more so when Vogue published clearer portraits of the beautiful bride. As a pretty big supporter of Anne Hathaway, it was really cool to see just how excited she was to be getting married–and in such an unbelievably elegant gown.
14. Bianca Jagger
Not all wedding dresses have to be flowing and fluffy, as proven by Mick Jagger‘s then-wife Bianca. How cool is this Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking Jacket? For her wedding.
15. Christina Ricci
Christina Ricci’s incredible Givenchy gown was a couture masterpiece.
16. Mia Farrow
Mia and her trademark pixie cut could not have looked better at her 1966 wedding to Frank Sinatra than in this beautiful white boxy jacket and dress.
16. Kate Middleton
Well, duh. Did you really think I was going to the leave of the wedding dress that 2
million billion people tuned in to see?
