The 2014 Billboard Music Awards fashion was certainly hit or miss, as music award shows tend to be. For some reason, musicians and pop stars on the whole seem not only to dress poorly, but to dress sensationally poorly. This year’s red carpet, on the other hand, featured some surprising bright spots that really raised the bar on music award red carpet fashion–there were some especially excellent gowns that I certainly didn’t see coming. Let’s get into it.
Carrie Underwood had one of my absolute favorite gowns of the evening–an art deco Oriett Domenech number in a neon citron hue. It’s one of the best takes on the neon trend that I’ve seen. Those earrings aren’t too shabby, either. 10 out of 10.
I barely recognize Kesha, who has reinvented herself as of late as an elegant red carpet attendee. She seriously classed up the joint with her beautiful gown, understated but sexy makeup, and minimal accessories. I’m crazy about her hair, too.
I am certain that I will get some flack for adding Jennifer Lopez‘s Donna Karen flowy leotard thing to this list, but I love it and I won’t apologize. It seems perfectly her, like it’s the natural evolution of her famous Versace number. I’m just as shocked as you are.
Continuing the night’s excellent use of neon, Miranda Lambert‘s Georges Hobeika dress was perfectly springy and Billboard Awards-appropriate. Her slick side part was a nice change from her typical princess look, and kept that pink from being too teeny bopper.
I never thought I’d see the day where Nicki Minaj didn’t wear something with pompoms attached, but she looks like a sexy siren in this Alexander McQueen gown. It’s nice to see her in something (relatively) toned down, and the serious cutouts keep it within Minaj’s trademark sexy style (I do wish it were slightly better tailored in the boob area–this picture shows what might have just been a momentarily albeit regrettable underboob incident). While I love her usual hijinks, it’s nice to see her in an outfit and not a costume.
