The Directors’ Guild Awards happened last night, and we were standing by on red carpet watch. The DGAs don’t have the most eye-popping red carpet. It’s a formal event, but it’s more about the directors than the actresses, so it’s not really an occasion for an A-lister to break out her closet of borrowed experimental couture. But this year some of our favorite celebrities took the DGAs red carpet as an opportunity to try out something a little bit different, and we got some pleasantly surprising outside the box style from Sandra Bullock and Kerry Washington.
Sarah Paulson has been winding up in a lot of unfortunate dresses this red carpet season, but this is a good one for her. It’s a flattering shape, and the print looks like a weird sea creature. We hate the shoes, but her haircut is fantastic.
Her beauty team was pretty on-point last night.
Lisa Rinna looks a bit uncomfortable in her bright yellow dress, but we give her props for wearing a color, even though she kind of looks like a banana pepper.
At first we thought Jane Lynch was wearing a Warblers’ uniform, but then we realized we really like how beautifully this is tailored. We don’t love the tie, or the frilly cuffs, or the busy pattern on the pocket square, but we can’t hate on tailoring like this.
Kerry Washington continues to flout the conventions of red carpet maternity fashion. She looks like she’s wearing a 1950s skirt tucked up under her arms as a dress, but it makes an interesting shape. She’s definitely not taking her pregnancy as a time to relax into some maxi dresses and just phone in the fashion. We just can’t even guess what she’ll wear on the red carpet right now, and that’s amazing.
This is really not a look we expect from Sandra Bullock. The simple black column dress is elegant and gorgeous, but the fabric gives it a bit of a sinister edge. (We like that.) And the makeup is way out of her usual comfort zone. She looks pretty vampy here, and we had to stop and stare at it for a while to be sure, but it turns out we like vampy Sandra Bullock.
