There are so many gorgeous gowns to have graced the Emmys’ red carpet. Sometimes celebrities look like they’re going to prom, and some of the less memorable ones blur together in a sea of sparkle sameness, but there is always one (or sometimes two) stunning dresses that you will remember forever. Time passes but you can easily recall the dress designer and the year the celebrity wore it–and it’s not just because you have it on your “Favorite Outfits OF All Time” Pinterest board.
Let’s reminisce by taking a look at 15 of the most unforgettable Emmy dresses:
You may love Olivia Wilde or hate her for helping popularize illusion dresses with this white Marchesa gown, but you have to admit it was stunning–and very well-designed to prevent a nip slip.
You probably remember quite a few dresses from last year’s Emmys, but in a couple of years from now, I guarantee you will still remember Lena Dunham‘s floral print Prada dress. How many times do people wear such a bold floral print on the red carpet?
If you weren’t a Vampire Diaries fan, you probably saw Nina Dobrev in this Donna Karan gown for the first time and thought “Who is that girl?” I don’t know how she walked in it, but she managed to get down the carpet and dazzle us.
We definitely won’t forget this dress, but we may not remember that Sarah Jessica Parker was attending the Emmys, and not prom.
We expect the same old black and sequinned gowns, but Ginnifer Goodwin surprised us in the best way possible in this orange Monique Lhuillier dress.
Gossip Girl‘s Serena this was not. Blake Lively stunned in this red Versace dress and proved she should do nothing but walk red carpets.
Wow! No one will forget Christina Hendricks and her ample cleavage in this mauve Zac Posen dress.
Sarah Silverman‘s LBD was so simple but so chic. And she claimed it cost $60. You definitely will remember that detail.
If you don’t remember the front of Sofia Vergara‘s gown, you certainly remember the back. This Zuhair Murad was the dress where the zipper popped, exposing Sofia’s famous backside just before Modern Family won an award.
Gwyneth Paltrow‘s illusion Pucci crop top and skirt originally divided critics. What was she doing exposing stomach on the red carpet? Oh, how things have changed.
Most celebs avoid wearing flowy dresses on the red carpet unless they want to start pregnancy rumors. Halle Berry wore this draped Emanuel Ungaro dress and looked so stunning that no one would have noticed if she was pregnant with twins.
It wasn’t just about the dress. Jennifer Aniston had the entire golden goddess look. When women saw this boho ensemble, they immediately tossed their hairbrushes.
This was a big fashion risk that paid off. January Jones looked like a beautiful mermaid that had grown legs in this Atelier Versace gown.
You probably have forgotten about Desperate Housewives long ago, but Eva Longoria looked so stunning in this Angel Sanchez gown to forget about it. The color was amazing against her skin.
Anna Paquin‘s Alexander McQueen gown reminded everyone of an armored breastplate and is one of the few dresses that can ever be accurately described as “badass.”
