A lot of us forget about winter clothes the second that we see the first few racks of spring merchandise coming in. It’s not that we don’t like the winter styles, it’s just that there is nothing like some refreshing pastel shades to perk us up on a dull winter day.

As tempting as it is to start shopping for the new season, it is worth checking out the sales because if you shop smart, you can pick up clothes that you can wear into the spring and next year.

These are the 11 things you need to be looking for in the end-of-season sales:

1. A Warm Coat

Sorry to break it to you, but next year is probably going to be just as cold as it was this year so try and snag a discounted coat. You’ll be happy that you have one already in your closet when the temperatures drop next year.

2. Jewelry

With a few exceptions, jewelry is one of those things that is season-less. Furthermore, jewelry doesn’t look as dated as clothing styles. Make sure you’re checking out the jewelry cases in addition to the clothing racks.

3. Jeans

Jeans are a wardrobe staple that will probably never go away. You might find some super trendy styles in the clearance, but if you want to get the most mileage out of a pair, look for classic washes and styles.

4. Warm Accessories

You can never have too many scarves, hats and gloves. If you find something you like that’s in the sale bin, get it. You never know when you’re going to lose a glove or that hat is going to get a hole in it. If you’re concerned about coordinating, stick with neutral colors and they will work with almost any coat.

5. Boots

Boots can be expensive so get them while they’re reduced. It also isn’t likely that your feet are going to change in size from this winter to the next.

6. Lingerie

If you love jewel tones or dark colors, make sure you check out the discounted lingerie. Pretty soon the majority of pieces will be in pastel colors. Plus, those ones will be full price.

7. Sweaters and Cardigans

Yes, they can be bulky to store, but they’re basics. Plus, you can wear lightweight ones well into the spring.

8. Officewear

If you work in a conservative office and you have to wear a suit, make sure you’re scanning the sales for work-appropriate clothes. A lot of suits can be worn year round. Ditto for blouses, pants and skirts.

9. Holiday Merchandise

Most holiday merchandise gets sold off in the post-Christmas sales, but you might find some still kicking around. Grab it now and it will cost you peanuts. Then laugh at everyone next year when they pay quadruple what you did for their festive sweaters.

10. Basic Tees

Whether you find short-sleeved T-shirts, long-sleeves ones or tank tops, stock up. They are the sort of pieces that you can year 12 months of the year.

11. Party Dresses/Jumpsuits/Rompers

Even if you don’t have a fancy occasion coming up, it is still worth browsing the formal wear. Is your cousin planning a wedding? Do you normally go out somewhere fancy for your birthday? Is there a gala at work? Chances are you’ll use that formal look before you know it.
