Sister Sister Credits

Sister, Sister was such a great show. We loved the Olsen twins but now there was another cool set of twins we could obsess over. Tia and Tamera Mowry taught us so much about family, friends, school and that it is possible to have a twin who you were separated at birth from then adopted by different families. Sister, Sister also taught us a lot about 1990’s fashion.

These are the style lessons we learned from Sister, Sister:

1. Twinning is always great, even if it’s by accident.Sister Sister Same Face

Tia and Tamera were twinning way before hashtags and Twitter. Not all of us had a recently discovered twin sister we could coordinate outfits with but we could always match our looks with our BFFs.

2. Just because you look the same, doesn’t mean you’re clones.Sister Sister Different

You already knew this lesson, but sometimes other people didn’t. Just because Tia and Tamera, or you and your best friend, dress the same did not mean you liked the exact same things. The similarities could end at your matching caps.

3. Practice posing for photos.Sister Sister Bad Photo

In the days before selfies, you never considered what your best angles were or what filter made your hair look the best. Tia and Tamera’s cringe-worthy yearbook photos showed we should practice posing for snaps so we don’t end up with a really awkward yearbook photo for everyone to see.

4. A track jacket completes any look.Sister Sister Track Jackets

When in doubt, throw on a track jacket. They were like the leather jacket of the ’90s. If you put one on, you instantly looked a bit fancier. It was the same thing when you put on rose tinted sunglasses.

5. There’s more to denim than basic blue jeans.Sister Sister Jeans

Everyone needed a pair of high-waisted jeans but you couldn’t call yourself a proper denim lover unless you had a pair of jean overalls in your closet. Sister, Sister showed there were so many other exciting denim options from caps to overalls with sunflower patches.

6. It’s always better to get ready in a group.Sister Sister Getting Ready

Getting ready for school would have been a lot more fun if you had a twin sister or you best friend came over in the morning. The only exception to this was if the mirror was too small or someone didn’t know you were supposed to smack your lips together simultaneously.

7. Never forget to complete your look with a hat or a headband.Sister Sister Go HOme Roger

If you weren’t wearing a scrunchie, you had better be wearing a hat or headband. Your head needed to be accessorized. There were so many options from Blossom-inspired hats to toques to the occasional tiara.

8. It’s about the pose as much as your outfit.Sister Siter Pose

Tia, Tamera and Lisa first taught us this important lesson and we’ve seen it on the red carpet again and again. You can have the coolest high-waisted jeans and suspenders or the best cropped cardigan but if you don’t know how to work it, your awesome look won’t get the attention it deserves.

9. If you have a great outfit idea, someone else has probably thought of it too.Sister Sister Halloween

It was important to never get ahead of yourself and think you came up with something completely unique, especially if you bought it at the mall. If you thought of it, someone else probably had a similar idea when they spotted that floral crown.

10. High school stinks, but wear that hat if you really want to.Sister Sister Highschool Hats

It was disappointing that high school wasn’t as awesome as it seemed to be on other shows. However, Sister, Sister made us realize that if people didn’t appreciate Tia and Tamera’s awesome style, they weren’t worth their (or our) time. The twins were the coolest and we would gladly have raided their closets.

11. Matching your hat to your backpack pulls your entire look together.Sister Sister Suspenders Backpack Roger

Some fashion rule books say you should match your shoes and your bag for a polished look but Sister, Sister showed that matching your hat and your backpack straps had the same effect. If you weren’t a backpack fan, you could match your suspenders to your toque.

12. There is always room in your closet for another printed vest.Sister Sister Vest

(GIF: Tumblr)

For days when it was too hot to wear your track jacket, you could top your look off with a printed vest. Denim vests were a classic but Tia and Tamera made a case for printed vests that look like you got them from your grandpa’s closet.

13. A turtleneck was an essential layering piece.Sister Sister

(GIF: Tumblr)

Forget about your white t-shirts, you needed a turtleneck to layer under your printed cardigans, vests and grandpa sweaters. Neutral colors were acceptable but if you wanted a proper Tia and Tamera look, you went for bright colors that contrasted the eye-catching print of your outer layer.
