Beyonce is not the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of punk, but she’s been named an honorary chair of this year’s Costume Institute Gala celebrating the Punk: From Chaos to Couture exhibit opening this spring at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Women’s Wear Daily reports that Beyonce’s honorary chair status means she could even turn up in the receiving line for the May 6 gala, where she’d stand alongside the event’s co-chairs, Rooney Mara, Riccardo Tisci, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Anna Wintour.
All the fashion people who go to the Costume Institute’s annual gala get to live out their Cinderella fantasies in couture gowns, but most of the contenders for the best-dressed list try to show up in something that plays along with the theme of the gala and the upcoming exhibit, so we look forward to seeing how all the fancy people interpret “punk” in a six-figure sort of way. There will probably be loads of Vivienne Westwood, which is always welcome.
But what will Beyonce wear? Punk isn’t exactly in her wheelhouse. Will she stick with her normal fare and turn up in a sparkly, body-hugging gown that makes her look like the genetically gifted person of impossible gorgeousness and affluence that she is? Or will she embrace the theme of the evening and turn up costumed in something plaid and safety-pinned?
It’s Beyonce, so she’ll probably stick to the sparkles and skin. But we can always dream, right?
