For a while now, fashion people have been patting themselves on the back for casting “unconventional” models like Kate Upton. The former Vogue Paris editrix Carine Roitfeld, for example, even cast Upton to star in the first issue of her fancy new glossy, the prosaically named CR Fashion Book. This reminded everyone that Roitfeld bucks convention and forges her own path and does provactive, interesting things (like hiring hot blonde 20-year-olds to pose for pictures?).
For the second issue of CR, however, Roitfeld made the actually unlikely decision to cast the star of Mob Wives, Big Ang–the brassy Staten Island bar owner with Family connections. Roitfeld placed Ang alongside Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Amborsio and Russian bombshell Irina Shayk in their typical bikinis for an arresting, irreverent photo.
Oh, and according to Roitfeld, working with Ang was awesome:
“It was an idea of Bruce Weber. He will give you crazy ideas, and he knows I’m always going to love it. Bruce loves the idea of special people, and you discover that OK, Big Ang has big breasts, but she has such a big heart and is such a great person. We had everyone dancing together in Miami, and it was such a great day. Everyone had a crush on Big Ang! She looked hot, and she’s such a nice person. And you know, it’s good to have a different vision of fashion than just to be a very beautiful, skinny girl.”
That last part makes us cringe (some context) but… maybe stunt casting is the closest fashion will ever come to diversity.
Yay, we guess?
