Whenever I hear about a super inexpensive, unconventional wedding dress option, I’m a bit skeptical. I expect them to be a bit like the duct tape prom dresses, which even at their most gorgeous are “gorgeous for a dress made of duct tape.” But I’ll be a bit more open-minded in the future, thanks to this eerily talented Redditor who made her $30 wedding dress on the bus, and it is gorgeous. Just gorgeous, full stop, no qualifiers.
Reddit user Alkikat posted this photo of her wedding dress to /r/DIY, and it’s unbelievable. She crocheted it herself on the bus during her morning commute, and she says it only cost her a bit under $30 in materials, including the fabric for the lining. It took her about five months to finish, and on top of being absolutely breathtaking, it is machine washable. She wrote:
“My commute time couldn’t be used for anything else anyway. The dress is also machine washable (I’ve washed it several times), doesn’t wrinkle or need any special care, and I plan on wearing it again with linings of different colors and with the train bustled up in different ways.”
She even made a stop-motion video of the dress’s progress.
Obviously there is a lot of skill involved in the production of a dress like this, but skills can be learned. I know I’m going to spend the rest of the work day googling “how to crochet” tutorials right now.
