Cara Delevingne and Chanel go together like peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs, me and Kylie Jenner‘s Lip Kits—that is to say, they are the perfect, long-lasting team. Cara has walked and starred in countless Chanel shows and campaigns, and now, she’s taking on a new role as the face of Chanel’s new spring eyewear campaign.
The full campaign, which was reportedly shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself, won’t run until April, but Chanel shared a sneak peek at the campaign the other day. If you ask me, it feels categorically un-Chanel, but very Cara:
In the video, Cara is seen wearing a backwards snapback and pair of oversize shades, not entirely unlike the one’s that Karl Lagerfeld appears to wear on a daily basis. The outer edges of glasses bear the same quilted pattern made famous by so many infamous vintage Chanel handbags. The overall blue tone makes a bit difficult to see the shades, for sure, but perhaps that’s simply a tactic to keep their new spring eyewear line under wraps as long as possible while still piquing our interest with a teaser? Oh to be the mind behind marketing tactics at Chanel.
Chanel has a rare talent for incorporating cultural throwbacks into their collections, while, at the same time, taking the classics and transforming them into something more modern. I have a feeling this eyewear campaign, when seen in its entirety, is going to epitomize that particular characteristic of the brand. The style shown in the preview very much reflects Cara Delevingne’s street style, but with Lagerfeld at the helm, he’s bound to have some tricks up his sleeve.
