When Carine Roitfeld abruptly departed Vogue Paris, she was replaced by longtime buddy and collaborator, Emmanuelle Alt. Ever since, people have been curious how the switch affected their friendship. The New York Times asked Carine about the woman she “once considered her ally” (their words, presumably) and she said:
“Maybe this was not supposed to be a friendship,” Ms. Roitfeld said. “If I look at the balance, maybe I lost some people I thought were my friends, but I made so many new friends. I am very happy, in the end, because I am the winner.”
Sorry? That French accent can be tough. Did you say … ?
“I am the winner,” she repeated. “At the end of the day.”
We appreciate Carine’s candor but we’re not totally sure what she means. Add to this how Karl Lagerfeld feels.
