We’re so thrilled that it’s awards season again, because not only will there be tons of red carpets, the award contenders will be bringing their A games even to other red carpets. This year is a particular treat, because Cate Blanchett is a potential Oscar candidate for Blue Jasmine, and that means she will be making the rounds in some earth-shattering couture.
Cate Blanchett is one of the best red carpet dressers there is. She’s stunning and poised and wears all the weird, conceptual, arty runway stuff that everyone else is afraid of. Last night at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, she descended to Earth like a stony angel in this textured silver dress and jacket by Antonio Berardi.
This is a difficult look to wear. It has a heavy, flounced skirt, and the stiff jacket gives her shoulders an inhuman shape. True, this is not her best look ever, but any look has a hard road before it when being worn by Cate Blanchett, because Cate Blanchett’s best looks are among the best looks that have ever been worn by anyone. But it’s interesting and beautiful and she looks like an effigy of Queen Elizabeth.
The only real misstep here is the styling. The dress has a high-low hem that puts a viewer’s focus square on her feet, and the black shoes she’s wearing make her appendages disappear into the carpet. Red Carpet Fashion Awards points out that the dress was originally styled with a dramatic red shoe, and that would have looked so much better.
