You know how sometimes, you see a dress, bag, or pair of shoes and you’re like, “Oh, those are nice.” But then you find out that they are by a famous designer and are very, very expensive, and your tune switches to more of a, “Huh, is that so?” feeling. Chloe Grace Moretz‘s outfit for the Los Angeles premiere of If I Stay fits that description. Am I allowed to make a “we expected Moretz of you” joke here?
Chloe wore a long, black tulle Schiaparelli Spring 2014 Couture gown that felt less “elegant premiere” and more “tenth grader who got invited to senior prom.” It feels both too immature and too old for her at the same time, which makes it a confusing choice for the
red black carpet. The Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry added a touch of sparkle that would’ve looked great with a more playful outfit, but wind up enhancing the costume effect of it instead.
We know she is very competent at dressing herself (or at least has hired somebody who’s great at it); she’s shown that with previous looks for premieres. However, in this case, I think her stylist took a day off or had a few too many Smirnoff Ices because this whole outfit feels a bit less sophisticated than what we’ve come to expect from Chloe.
Of course, she is still a teenager–perhaps we are expecting too much of her! When it comes down to it, at the end of the day, Chloe is still leaps and bounds better than most of us were at styling ourselves in high school. We just hope to see her wearing things that are more colorful and less drab, like her fellow teen style icons Kiernan Shipka and Elle Fanning have embraced.
