In what is usually an unapologetic gambit for pop culture relevance, a famous female celebrity has posed in her underwear for a ladmag. While we have no objection to posing in underwear (ladmags are another story), we’re not going to pretend it’s a career decision that hinges on celebrating one’s body, taking control of one’s sexuality or just having a great underwear time in front of strange people with cameras. It does, however, have a lot to do with generating blog posts exactly like this one.
When we last saw Christina Aguilera, she was FLAUNTING HER STUNNING WEIGHT LOSS, so landing the cover of Maxim is right on schedule for her weight-related career trajectory. This is the saddest of the celebrity news cycles, we believe (or one of them): when a famous lady looks slim and toned at the beginning of her career, suffers emotionally as the spotlight fades, gains a nearly imperceptible amount of weight, and experiences all the repulsive backlash that occurs whenever anyone in the public eye gains weight. Then come the magazine interviews in which said celebrity “opens up” about the cruelty, declares how much she loves her new body and insists she’s quite comfortable inside it. And we would all go home happy with our respective Us Weekly covers if it weren’t for…
The part of the cycle when said celebrity gets sick of the cursed 5 or 10 lbs, resolves to lose it and then–as if the whole publicity trail of body acceptance and positive thinking had suddenly evaporated–she shows up on a red carpet flaunting! her! stunning! weight! loss! The photoshoots in ladmags follow immediately after.
In this way, Chirstina Aguilera and Jennifer Love Hewitt are exactly the same person, though, so that’s interesting.
Anyway, here is a truly hilarious thing Aguilera told Maxim, presumably while a stranger was photographing her in her underwear:
“I’m such a down-to-earth girl, I’m comfortable in just a jersey and boy’s underwear,” Aguilera tells the mag. “Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do. Sexiness should be effortless.”
