If there’s one thing you need to know about it, it’s that it’s ridiculously easy for me to talk myself out of buying something. It doesn’t matter whether that something is a jacket or shoes or spicy salsa or a dog, I can pretty much convince myself that nothing is worth the money (except for lipstick of course, because that’s always worth the money). There is, however one thing that acts as an exception to this rule, and that is basically any piece of clothing that has some amount of exciting back detail.
I don’t know what it is, but I love when any article of clothing is all business in the front, but with a party in the back. Maybe it’s that they can be so easily transitioned from day-to-night looks, or maybe it’s a sign of some deeply-buried desire to grow a mullet. The world may never know, though I sincerely hope it’s not the latter.

Tops like this really are a must-have for pretty much any wardrobe. They’re the perfect summer tank, and you can easily wear them to work in the cooler months simply by layering a blazer or cardigan on top.
So, this might not necessarily be an office-appropriate blazer, but throw it on over a t-shirt and jeans, and you’ve immediately elevated a nighttime look from basic to fun and a little bit edgy.
Just try to tell me you wouldn’t live in this sweater.
I don’t know if you guys have ever touched one of Madewell’s silk tops, but I imagine that it’s what angel’s wings feel like, if angels wore gorgeous blue tanks.
This is one of my favorite tops on this list because it’s already pretty bold without the extra back detail. It’s also a good way to incorporate canary yellow into your wardrobe for fall, as it can be a relatively difficult color to pull off.
The front of this top is just a standard crepe button down, which is always work appropriate with a pair of ankle-length skinnys and heels, but the back adds a little bit of flair.
I have a shirt with similar sheer paneling, and let me just say that it’s the most comfortable and breezy piece of clothing that I own. Just make sure you’re wearing the right underwear (or, at least, underwear that you don’t mind having other people see).
Not only is the color perfect, but that uneven lattice cutout in the back is subtle, but still obvious. Plus, if you want to wear this work for day and night, keep your hair down at work to cover up the cutouts and put it up at night!
Honestly, I would wear plaid underwear if given the opportunity, so it was a pretty easy choice to add a plaid button-down to this guide.
This is definitely a nighttime look no matter what, but the dress from the front is actually pretty basic. Essentially, it’s the perfect LBD for someone who wants something classic, but not too classic.
I die for a navy jumpsuit any day of the week, and from the front, this is a great, tailored option. But from the back, it’s all kinds of sassy.
If you want to layer like the model is here you can open the zipper as much as you want. If not, keep it closed, and it’s still a fun additional detail to an already ridiculously soft fall sweater.
And, of course, you can never go wrong with floral, so the button-down back is just the icing on the cake.
