fishing

Well, this is the stuff of nightmares.

Danish fishing magazine Fisk & Fri has come under fire for publishing a series of bizarre pin-ups called “Fish Girls,” most of which show attractive naked ladies cavorting with the fresh cadavers of fish that recently murdered for sport. Is this what Carol J. Adams was talking about in The Sexual Politics Of Meat?

“There is such misogyny in these pictures,” says blogger Tomas Gunnarsson. “I’m thinking primarily of the images in which a woman is a fish that has teeth around her nipple and when a girl is playing dead in the water.”

As a vegan, I am not particularly horrified, at least, not any more than I already am that people kill animals for fun. (Yes, I count preferring the taste of animal protein to plant protein as “fun.”) As a feminist, I am not particularly horrified either, as it’s not news to me that we live in a society in which men like to objectify naked women. (I have even utilized this fact to make money.) Of course, I find the more violent images distasteful, and believe they’re worth analyzing from a systemic, feminist perspective, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I think they are a cut and dry example for something that’s Bad For Women.

Am I defending this fish porn? Heavens no. I’m just saying that this fish porn is the inevitable byproduct of a society that is flesh-hungry in more ways than one. The fish porn is us. Gaze upon it and weep. (NSFW, obviously!)
