Demi Lovato has pretty much been the most magical creature in all the land for the past few months. She’s released amazing new singles and put on a stunning performance during Saturday Night Live this weekend, released spur-of-the-moment, body-positive and makeup-free photos for Vanity Fair, and pretty much established herself as a musical masterpiece queen with this summer’s full-on anthem, “Cool for the Summer.” And now, she’s continuing her quest for world domination in a way we didn’t expect, but are still beyond excited about: she signed a contract with top modeling agency, Wilhelmina Models.
Wilhelmina made the announcement over the weekend with the following Instagram post:
The caption read,
“NOW REPRESENTING: #DemiLovato (@ddlovato)! Be sure to cop her new album #Confident on iTunes now!”
Gotta love a sweet and simple announcement of some pretty big news, right? And Demi’s in good company, too—Wilhelmina’s celebrity roster includes the likes of stars such as Orange is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose, Breaking Bad‘s RJ Mitte, and
my future husband Nick Jonas.
Honestly, the decision to sign Demi is a pretty big deal for a multitude of reasons. For one, it further solidifies Demi as one of the biggest stars of this generation, in case anyone was at all doubting her status. And, for another, it’s always a big deal when giants in the fashion world acknowledge and place body positivity on a pedestal (in a good way, of course). This addition to Wilhelmina’s model roster just shows that we really are making moves toward body acceptance in a world dominated by size-0 models. In a press release, Wilhelmina’s Senior Model Manager Jose Covarrubias said,
“We are very excited to have such a phenomenal musical star with an editorially beautiful image on board with us here at Wilhelmina. Not only is Demi immensely talented, she also has confidence, sophistication, maturity and body positivity that we will use to build her presence in the world of fashion.”
And, of course, Demi was excited to acknowledge her own success as well:
“I’m very excited to see where our work together will go creatively as I enter the next phase of my career and continue to develop as an artist.”
As someone who’s been a big Demi fan since her earliest Disney days on As the Bell Rings, I really couldn’t be happier to see her making such major moves. I already horde her magazine covers (her September Cosmo cover was to die for) and am constantly following her ever-changing beauty, so I’m definitely excited to see her take on major editorial campaigns, Kendall Jenner– and Gigi Hadid-style. Who knows, maybe we’ll see her on some of the biggest runways at Fashion Week come February! Not to get my hopes up too much, but I’d die to see her in a Christian Siriano show. Then again, I’m die to see a cardboard cutout of a meerkat in a Christian Siriano show because everything he does is perfect, but that’s a story for another day.
Congratulations, Demi! We can’t wait to see how you’re going to transform the fashion world.
