Beloved Belgian-American designer Diane von Furstenberg gave an interview this week in which she explained her signature wrap dress was invented for sneaking out of strangers’ beds discreetly:

“Well, if you’re trying to slip out without waking a sleeping man, zips are a nightmare.”

Well, actually she said that to a French reporter in the ’80s, but it happened before the internet, so this is news to some of us. Pretty awesome news too, given that her iconic design is already the uniform of driven, independent ladies everywhere. Anyway, The Telegraph brought up that one-time explanation to her this week and she stands by it:

Remind her of this now, and the 64-year-old gives a languid smile. “Haven’t you ever tried to creep out of the room unnoticed the following morning? I’ve done that many times.”
