Fess up. Which of you found a magic lamp that grants wishes this week? Because a new musical of The Devil Wears Prada is being developed, and the only way we here at The Gloss could be more excited about it is if you told us Meryl Streep was going to reprise her role as Miranda Priestly, but in musical form.
The Devil Wears Prada will make an excellent musical. The storyline is a little bit Thoroughly Modern Millie and a little bit Jekyl and Hyde, there’s a delightful ingenue in Andy, a striving Tasmanian Devil of nerves and snarky quips in Emily, and all the big diva potential in the world from Miranda Priestly. And just imagine the costumes!
The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most quotable movies in recent memory. Basically everything out of Meryl Streep’s and Emily Blunt’s mouths seems custom written to be made into an animated GIF.
Just tell me that quote doesn’t beg to be turned into a big song and dance number.
The Devil Wears Prada seems custom designed to be a big, quotable, over the top musical costume extravaganza with plenty of big diva songs that will become everyone’s favorite karaoke standards. One of the best fashion scenes in movie history is the “Think Pink” song and dance from Funny Face, and The Devil Wears Prada is already basically that song, but an hour and a half long.
According to the Associated Press, Broadway producer Kevin McCollum is working on developing the Devil Wears Prada musical as part of a deal with 20th Century Fox. But really, I’m pretty sure one of my coworkers made a deal with a crossroads devil to make this musical happen. As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth it.
