diane von furstenberg

Are you hearing that Diane von Furstenberg as never met a woman who is not strong and tinking to yourself, “Goodness, I am barely strong enough to contract my muscles in a way that allows me to hold one her wrap dresses on my body in a decent fashion?” Can you even contract muscles to keep wrap dresses from flying open? I can’t. But have no fear! That does not mean you’re weak!

According to a recent interview with The New York Times Magazine, she claims that:

“The situation with women is very much on a pendulum. All I can tell you is that I’ve never met a woman who is not strong, but sometimes they don’t let it out. Then there’s a tragedy, and then all of a sudden that strength comes. My message is let the strength come out before the tragedy.”

I mean, I do think that anyone who does not respond to tragic life events by curling up and dying is a survivor, and pretty much everyone experiences tragedy at some point, so, yes, she has a point. I guess really she’s saying that every woman has the potential to be strong, although that’s a bit like “having the potential to rescue a baby out of a burning building” which does not make most people “baby savers.” Or whatever we call people who do that? Heroes, I guess.

Well, no matter, it’s a very nice sentiment, albeit one that does not help me keep a wrap dress closed whatsoever.
