Los Angeles premiere of 'This Is The End'

Emma Watson is currently engaged in the difficult project of discussing consumerism without sounding like a wealthy, well dressed hypocrite as she promotes her latest project, The Bling Ring. Because there is nothing your BFF Emma Watson can’t do, she’s generally coming off very thoughtful and non-hypocritical! But she did arouse some suspicion that she was lying to seem more “down to earth” when she claimed to personally own fewer than ten pairs of shoes, like a peasant.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, Watson started out by throwing a bit of shade on Paris Hilton by describing her palatial closet—which appears in the movie—thusly:

“She could never wear all of those clothes and half of them were brand new and still had the price tag on. But I suppose she just bought them to have them. We’ve all bought things on impulse but that’s an entirely different thing…It’s almost like consumerism as a form of kleptomania.”

Consumerism as kleptomania? I like that. Some people would probably steal a lot more if they weren’t filthy rich. And maybe the difference between a fancy lady and a crazy hoarder is one has the ability to build walk-in closets and hire a personal organizer.

She continued: “I’ve got about eight pairs of shoes and that’s it…But it’s easy for me to sound like a total hypocrite because, of course, I’m dressed in designer clothes right now.”

Hold the phone. Just “about eight”? That’s fewer pairs of shoes than you, a normal person reading this, probably have in your regular sized closet right now. (I only have a few pairs of shoes at any given time, but that’s because almost nothing fits on my deformed monster feet.) Are we to believe that millionaire actress Emma Watson, she of Harry Potter and the frequent red carpet appearances, has just eight pairs of shoes to call her own?

Well, most of those designer red carpet heels are probably loans. And The Telegraph‘s “eagle-eyed trawl” of Watson’s off-duty paparazzi photos reveals that she has at least nine pairs of shoes, which they seem to see as some “gotcha” moment, but which I think qualifies as “about eight.” This makes sense, because Emma Watson is honest of soul and pure of heart and would never lie to us about anything. Better luck next time, haters.
