Fiona Apple

Leave it to fashion people to be complete assholes when a Grammy winning icon is performing just for them, and leave it to Fiona Apple to call them out on it.

At a party thrown by Louis Vuitton last night in Tokyo to celebrate “timeless muses,” timeless artist Fiona Apple was booked to play an intimate set for the very special people assembled there. And she tried. But because the party was full of wealthy, coked out socialites who probably had Mariah Carey play their tenth birthday parties, they couldn’t even stop flapping their jaws long enough for the type of short performance that generally happens at these things. So Fiona did what any self-respecting artist/kindergarten teacher would do: she asked them to stop being dicks in a variety of kind and humorous ways:

Via WWD:

Partway through her short set, she climbed on top of her grand piano and asked the audience to be quiet so that she could perform. She then challenged everyone to be silent for the duration of a tone she created by striking a small metal bell.

But they cared not! So Fiona Apple opened up that same can of whoopass she’d sampled from at the 1997 VMAs and helpfully reminded them that THIS WORLD IS BULLSHIT!:

Apple instructed the audience to “shut the f–k up” and uttered other expletives, both audibly and under her breath, calling the event’s attendees “rude.” She continued with her set before shouting, “Predictable! Predictable. Fashion, what the f–k?” as she stormed off the stage.

Damn straight, girl. You show those Delevingnes and von Thurn und Taxises who’s boss.

Oh, and fuck WWD for getting just a liiiiittle bit snippy here:

The show was punctuated with other bizarre moments, such as when she hit her head with her microphone, did a back bend over her piano bench and stared intensely at her guitarist as if in a love-struck trance.

How dare she put on an interesting performance at a party that ostensibly celebrates “women who are discovering, taking risks”?

That’s it, Louis Vuitton and WWD. You blew it. You are only allowed to listen to Lana Del Rey from now on. Hope you’re happy.
