Today we lost a great one. One third of the Beastie Boys, Adam “MCA” Yauch, died today at the age of 47 after a battle with cancer.
Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in his parotid (salivary) gland in 2009 which resulted in the cancellation of several tour dates that year. It was also at that time that a press release said “luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable.” What followed was surgery and several weeks of additional treatment in the hopes of keeping the cancer from spreading.
The Beastie Boys were one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time. The three boys from Brooklyn changed the music scene and become a mainstream phenomenon that acquired millions of fans due to their stylistic encompassing of several genres of music. As they matured the group became more and more politically active especially when it came to violence against women.
Music geniuses, political activists and one of the most important bands of the past few decades, The Beastie Boys were, are and will always be icons. MCA will be missed by millions.
