Geraldo recently stated that Trayvon Martin -a 17 year old student armed only with a packet of skittles – would be alive were he not wearing a hoodie. This is not actually true. Trayvon Martin is dead because self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman gunned him down and told the police he was acting in self defense (they took his word for it) – and Zimmerman is, at best, a very paranoid man. So, there’s that. But also Trayvon was wearing a hoodie, so he really should have seen that coming.

Geraldo explains:

No one black, brown or white can honestly tell me that seeing a kid of color with a hood pulled over his head doesn’t generate a certain reaction, sometimes scorn, often menace.

When you see that kid coming your way, unless you specifically recognize him you are thinking ghetto or ghetto wannabe high-style or low-brow wise-ass. Pedestrians cross the street to avoid black or brown hoodie wearers coming their way.

His son disagrees, and has told Geraldo that he is ashamed of him. We aren’t ashamed of him (and we acknowledge that yes, in the real non-heaven world people will make TONS of assumptions about you based on how you are dressed) but we do think that this is utterly insane. We found you this picture explaining why, so just pretend I spent 1000 words on the topic:
