As an OG Glee fan, it’s been tough to watch something that was so original, spirited, and joyful devolve into a parody of itself over the past few seasons. Nonetheless, Glee was and is still a remarkable, groundbreaking piece of television, if for no other reason than the fact that they essentially produce an hour-long musical each week. And when they want to get theatrical….they really get theatrical. Obviously the Lady Gaga v. Katy Perry episode is the first thing that comes to mind, but Glee has had some fantastically extravagant costumes over the years. Join me for a trip down memory lane…

1. Rachel’s First Attempt at Gaga

glee gagaThis dress was a hilarious masterpiece, and I only wish I could have been part of the costume design team that put it together. Rachel Berry never quite had a knack for glamour, but the girl knew how to make a statement.

2. Gaga Success

iglee-ep120_sc15_0035Costume designer Lou Eyrich absolutely crushed every single one of these Gaga-inspired looks. That bubble dress on Tina was particularly perfect.

3. Holding Out for a Hero

HoldingOutForAHeroThis superhero outfit was one of the best things Melissa Benoist ever got to wear on Glee, and obviously Becca Tobin looks amazing as well. I just feel like if I was going to be a superhero, I would definitely want boob flowers, know what I mean? Also, this scene is now a preview because Melissa Benoist is playing Supergirl

4. Roar

glee-katy-gaga-9The production of Katy Perry‘s “Roar” was just as over-the-top as it well should have been. And since I have a passionate love affair with Darren Criss in my mind, I didn’t hate this outfit, if you can even call it that. Also, can we just be amazed for a second at how muscular Becca is? That girl is a force of nature.

5. Heather Morris As Britney Spears

Heather-Morris-as-Britney-006I mostly was not a fan of any of Glee‘s Britney-centric episodes, but at least the costumes were gloriously over-the-top.

Click through for more classic musical moments, Kurt Hummel being ridiculous, and a moment you won’t even remember.

6. Toxic

Toxicunholytrinity2Glee’s performance of Britney’s “Toxic” during the 100th episode was so over-the-top sexual that I had trouble watching after reminding myself what age they’re supposed to be. The other two aren’t quite as bad as Naya Rivera, who looks like she’s in a Victoria’s Secret ad or the beginning of a porno.

7. Whatever This Is

9.nocrop.w670.h408They have put Chris Colfer in some truly unfortunate outfits over the years, but seriously WHAT is this? Everyone else looks normal, and he’s wearing a pleather track suit and a Russian hat.

8. Rocky Horror

Cr: Mike Yarish/FOXRemember these days? “Rocky Horror Glee Show” gave the costumes designers another opportunity to go wild, and they certainly took advantage. It’s obscenely embarrassing that hours of my life have been spent listening to the Glee version of “Time Warp”…

9. Brave

Brave_SRLea Michele and Naya Rivera doing Sara Bareilles was one of my favorite musical moments from last seasons (duh), and their outfits were just as spectacular as their voices. Rachel’s transformed Funny Girl number is stunning, and Santana’s MNM Couture gown is golden glowing perfection.

10. Mamma Mia

GuiltyPleasuresScreenshots8Another of last season’s best musical moments, Glee did Mamma Mia in a way only Glee could. While Rachel and the New York crew were goofing around and singing in their apartment, the McKinley crew was truly channeling ABBA.

11. Food Outfits?

If you even remember this moment from season one, you are a more dedicated Glee fan than me.
