A military blog called Stars and Stripes reports that the US Navy is in “preliminary talks” with Ralph Lauren about possibly designing new uniforms. Earlier this year, female sailors addressed problems with uniforms at a women’s symposium – mainly, they complained that uniforms didn’t fit well and were sometimes uncomfortable. According to The Rumor Doctor on Stars and Stripes:

“The Navy has not hired Ralph Lauren to redesign female sailors’ uniforms, but [Navy Exchange Service Command] has opened up an initial dialogue with Ralph Lauren, one of our top-tier manufacturing resources, who has offered to provide advice regarding women’s uniform sizing and help support current initiatives,” said NEXCOM spokeswoman Kathleen Martin via e-mail.

Does this just mean Lauren is consulting? Does it mean he’s in the running for a new gig and they’re also meeting with other designers? Either way, for women in the navy who complain about pants bunching up and shoulders being cut too wide, this is incredibly promising.
