There have been a few dresses, throughout the ages, that have managed to cut through the din of now-mindless 24-hour red carpet coverage and, in their small way, become legendary. There’s the good examples (Charlize Theron in orange Vera Wang, Cate Blanchett in lavender Gaultier, to name a few) and then there are the ones that became legend for how much of the female body they expose.

It was Jennifer Lopez in that mythic plunging green Versace who first broadcast to the world that if you walk down a red carpet naked, people will know your name the next day (Rose McGowan discovered that a few years before Lopez, though). Toni Braxton tried her luck soon after.

Now, there’s an entire cottage industry of actresses, heiresses and wannabes strolling down red carpets in tiny straps of fabric clinging to their bodies by industrial fashion tape (or nothing) and hoping that those tiny straps will launch 1,000 blog posts just like this one.

Jaimie Alexander is the latest actress to do so. While she is best known for her role on Kyle XY, she is also in the Thor franchise, so we’re a little surprised by the urgency of what she wore to last night’s Hollywood premiere:

This is Spring 2014 Azzaro, by the way.

At this point in the world and the internet, must we ever be so naive to think someone could wear a dress like this because… she simply liked it? Is such a thing even possible anymore?

We’d argue that very few red carpet decisions hinge purely on the wearer liking it and are more often guided by public perception–how the look will photograph, what will guarantee positive coverage, who are the important designers of the moment, how firm and buffed your pubis will look on the Daily Mail.

Oh, and we didn’t even mention the back:
