A little while ago, we started noticing the cover of Joy Division‘s Unknown Pleasures cropping up everywhere. As in, not just on predictable types like guys in bands, but… small children. And bros. And girls with purse dogs. Apparently Disney noticed this, too.
Yes, they unveiled a version of the shirt featuring Mickey Mouse. Here’s the product description:
“Inspired by the iconic sleeve of Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album, this Waves Mickey Mouse Tee incorporates Mickey’s image within the graphic of the pulse of a star. That’s appropriate given few stars have made bigger waves than Mickey!”
Please take a moment to laugh heartily. The shirt sold out this week, before anyone at Disney blinked into recognition that Unknown Pleasures is one of the most viscerally depressing albums ever recorded. They’ve pulled the shirt for the foreseeable future, because… because obviously.
Surely these things will go for a lot on eBay, but until then please feel free to imagine Mickey chirping, “In the shadowplay, acting out your own death, knowing no more / As the assassins all grouped in four lines, dancing on the floor / And with cold steel, odour on their bodies made a move to connect.”
