So Annie Leibovitz is collaborating with the Kardashians on something for their Sears collection. Let’s take a minute to process that. I know Leibovitz has had some money trouble in recent years, but it seems like “collaborating” with the Kardashians (as opposed to simply photographing them for, say, Vanity Fair) is nothing more than a byproduct of financial desperation.
Anyway, someone sent out a press release announcing the collaboration. The Observer got a copy:
Kourtney, Kim and Khloe personally invite you to join them in celebrating the launch of the Kardashian Kollection. Join the stylish Kardashian klan on September 6th at the private studio of the legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz for an exclusive preview of their fabulous new fashion Kollection for Sears.
At best, this was probably the work of an embittered publicist, frustrated to be saddled with repping a Kardashian event and trying to be clever. At worst, this was someone who doesn’t realize that the word “Klan” comes with certain deep-seated and traumatic associations.
This just reminds of two recent major editorial oversights: FHM‘s repulsive coverage of Andrej Pejic and Modcloth’s appallingly oblivious $275 volunteer-in-Africa skirt. All I can think is, how does this kind of thing pass through the hands of multiple free-thinking adults?
