These days our fashion magazines are usually covered with fresh-faced celebrities looking healthy and recognizable in big-time designer clothes. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship: The stars get more exposure for the projects they’re promoting, and the magazines get to sell more copies to all the stars’ big fans. But it wasn’t always like that. There was a time when fashion magazines were usually covered by professional models, like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Karl Lagerfeld took us back to that era with this Avedon-inspired spring cover for Harper’s Bazaar UK, in which he basically turned model/actress Huntington-Whiteley into a naked Betty Draper.

This is why we like seeing models on magazine covers. Actresses rarely appear on interesting or conceptual covers. They always look beautiful and engaging and commercial, but they’re generally on magazine covers to give a boost to their real jobs. For models, the covers are their real jobs. Actresses generally have to stay on-brand; models will let you do the weird stuff.


The retro styling and “Think Pink” cover line immediately recalls Funny Face, which Richard Avedon worked on. Carine Roitfeld styled the shoot, in which Huntington-Whiteley appears mostly naked, accessorized with some green and yellow Dior, giant hair, pink lipstick, and the most fantastic eyeliner we’ve ever seen. Huntington-Whiteley’s cheekbones come in a close second to Angelina Jolie‘s in Maleficent. OK, fashion, we get the message. We solemnly promise that we will learn to do cheekbone contouring by spring.
