Getting one’s clothes anywhere near Kate Middleton is a guarantee of massive sales and eternal fame for a designer, but aside from standing outside Kensington Palace and just throwing clothes at passing brunettes until one sticks, there’s not much one can do to make it happen. One designer has figured out a neat trick, though. Beatrice de Montille of the MerciMaman gift boutique managed to get one of her necklaces around the Duchess’ neck by going around her and straight to Pippa Middleton.
De Montille made up a baby-themed charm necklace she called “Duchess,” with a personalized disc bearing Prince George’s full name, a mini heart-shaped charm that says “W,” and a tiny figure of a boy. Then she sent it off to the Duchess’ sister and asked her to give it to Kate Middleton. After that there was nothing to do but wait.
“We had no news after the birth,” de Montille told People. “We didn’t know if (the duchess) was wearing it or not.”
Then in October de Montille spotted her necklace around the Duchess of Cambridge’s neck in a photo of her out shopping at Zara, and everything changed. De Montille put Kate Middleton’s picture on her site, and suddenly the $150 necklace started selling out completely. Custom ones can still be ordered, but you’ll have to get in line behind hundreds of other Kate fans.
“We created this for her and now we are selling the exact same necklace to everyone,” de Montille said. “I couldn’t think of a better ambassador. She is very chic.”
So if you are a young designer looking to manipulate the laws of supply and demand, just start sending free stuff to Pippa Middleton and cross your fingers that it splashes over onto Kate, because then you’ll be golden.
