Kate Middleton’s engagement dress nearly destroyed the entire company (Issa) that manufactured it. Weird. You would think that it would always be a good thing to have one of the most famous women in the world wearing your clothing, but you would think wrong. God, would you ever think wrong.
According to Vogue UK:
“It absolutely sky-rocketed the brand on a global scale, but it was too much,” said Issa chairwoman Camilla Al Fayed. “Demand was so huge the business couldn’t cope. If Kate wears a Zara dress, these huge companies have the backing to follow through. Issa was basically run by interns, students and Daniella [Helayel, the label’s founder and designer]. There was no business model.”
Al Fayed – daughter of former Harrods owner Mohamed – became the brand’s chairwoman in July 2011, three months after the royal wedding. The businesswoman acquired a 51 per cent stake in the label, while Helayel retained creative control. The company opens its first standalone store this week in Japan.
So it… actually seems like that worked out okay for them? And it was a temporarily blip, like someone dropping million of dollars in goldbars in your house might temporary really scuff up your floors? It kind of seems like it all worked out for the best, and I am pretty sure that there will be a fair number of people in Japan who will want to look exactly like a pretty, pretty princess.
You know, all things considered, I guess you thought right initially.
