I love a good, messy bed head look. A while back, we did a tutorial on how to get sexy unkempt hair without physically passing out first and it was tons of fun! Unfortunately, I think Katie Holmes did the whole “passing out” thing before her appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday, as her hair and makeup looked sleepy at best.

Holmes was in attendance for the Miss Meadows premiere at the SVA Theatre, which sounds like it would garner at least a little bit of effort. Instead, it looks as though she just threw on this silk Zac Posen Fall 2014 dress and gave up on getting ready after that. The dress is a gorgeous shade of maroon with structured boning in the top portion that is absolutely gorgeous, but then there’s that awkward hip design that I do not entirely understand the aesthetic of.

However, it was her makeup and hair that felt most lackluster in this look. Brushing her hair was apparently not something Holmes felt like doing today; this style is all sorts of floppy and disheveled. Her hair looks so healthy and shiny, so perhaps I am just resentful that she/whomever dressed her didn’t take advantage of that. To make matters worse, the makeup is a mismatched shade of bluish-purple that does not coordinate with the burgundy dress whatsoever, and her foundation looks heavy and too dewy.

If I had been styling this look, I would likely have done a simple chignon for a polished style or even bouncy, carefree curls that would have injected it with some fun. On the bright side, she wore the perfect shoes for this dress–they’re the perfect hue and everything! Small victories, folks. Small victories and small heels.
