Let’s talk about capes, ladies. A few years ago, it felt like they were really going to happen: Zara and H&M wracks filled up with them, Oprah named them a favorite thing (of her many favorite things) and girls on the street were learning how to belt such an item. Since then, they’ve kind of petered off–maybe because they can’t all be Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Tom Ford Oscars look, maybe because they’re a bit of a challenge to style well, maybe because they’re not quite as warm as real jackets.

Still, a trend’s a trend and, even though we thought we were on the tail end of this one, stylists Hollywood over are forever scrambling to put their clients in eye catching red carpet looks.

Katy Perry attended the UNICEF Snowflake Ball last night in New York City and wore a navy Naeem Khan column with matching cape. Per usual for Khan, the gown features hundreds of hours of intricate beading, plus a halter neck and cinched black belt.

Perry deserves some credit for opting for the tricky runway incarnation–many starlets would have dashed the cape.

How about another angle:

Unfortunately, removing the cape here might have made it work. Instead, the whole thing is so costume-y, so witch-y (especially thanks to the severe middle part).

She accessorized with a blue clutch, along with Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings and cuff.

What do you say?
