W is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with four striking November covers, each depicting a different decade of the glossy’s existence. Steven Klein shot four Hollywood It girls–Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, and Mia Wasikowska–as It girls of the other eras. Oh, and the results vary from weirdly good to just really weird.
First up is Rooney Mara in graphic Prada prints (and her holdover Girl With The Dragon Tattoo bob):
It’s odd, right? Is it the makeup? Or is it that we’re so used to relentless Photoshop that it’s weird to see the texture of human skin on a magazine cover?
For the ’80s, there’s Mia Wasikowska in Balenciaga:
We’re not entirely sure who looked like this in the ’80s, if anyone. She does, however, look like a deranged January Jones (or Michelle Williams?) as imagined by Guy Bourdin.
Onto our surprise favorite, in which Johansson looks like the cool babysitter of ’90s kid dreams everwhere:
But also Debbie Harry, circa 1999. She’s wearing Dolce & Gabbana and has never really looked more peculiar.
Finally, repping the ’00s, we have Knightley:
We’re none too psyched on Keira’s decaying peroxide hair (we’re surprised too) but we want her eyebrows so bad, even for a day. Maybe it will inspired us to return to slathering Rogaine on our forehead every night.
So, who wins?
